Elephants in front of Kilimanjaro

The past few days have been very different, but quite fascinating. On Saturday, we had a full day of classes from 8 AM to 4 PM. The first class was on water, sanitation and public health issues, the second class was on health systems behavior and the final was a general intro to public health to get us all on the same page before really beginning our public health discussions which will lead to field work. The classes were extremely interesting and have gotten me extremely excited for the further classes and research project.

Everything at KBC is still going great, it is the dry season here and the ground is certainly dry, however unlike Morocco, I am not severely uncomfortable, as the air still has some moisture in it. The baboons have not yet broken into my Banda and we are busy reclaiming our space from them. So far, I am regretting not bringing another pair of sneakers, long paints, and dry shampoo. Besides that, everything is wonderful!

As I write this, I am sitting in the Chomba (classroom/dining room/etc) drinking a Stoney Tangawizi (a wonderful ginger-ful drink) and am completely exhausted from our long day out on Safari. We rose at 5 AM to arrive first at Amboseli National Park. The day was incredible, filled with breathtaking views of Mt Kilimanjaro (Kili) with giraffes, elephants, zebras, antelope, gazelle, hippos, wildebeest, cheetahs, and a glimpse of a hyena! The elephants, zebra, antelope, gazelle and wildebeests were everywhere, while the cheetahs (two) and hyena were more elusive. We will be going back in two weeks and I hope to see more big cats! I wish I could post photos, but the internet is not strong enough.

I apologize for the short post, however I am exhausted and have a journal and literature review tonight before going to sleep. Most of this week will consist of classes preparing us for field work next week. The three weeks ahead of me will certainly be busy, but wonderful and exciting. I am so excited to see how my thoughts, opinions and ideas evolve through my time here.
